Navy Body Fat Calculator + BMI (Tape Measure Method)

About This Calculator

This calculator estimates body fat percentage using the US Navy tape-measure method, which uses simple circumference measurements (waist, neck, and hip for women) to estimate body fat. It also calculates BMI if you provide weight. Both metrics are estimates and should be used for tracking trends over time, not for diagnosis. This tool is educational only and not medical advice. Measurement consistency matters more than a single reading. If your goal is body composition, nutrition quality supports training and recovery. BeyondCal helps you track protein plus micronutrients and electrolytes so your diet supports your goals beyond just calories.

  • Estimate body fat % using the US Navy tape-measure method
  • Separate formulas for men and women
  • Supports metric (cm/kg) and imperial (in/lb) units
  • Optional BMI calculation when weight is provided
  • Optional fat mass and lean mass estimates when weight is provided
  • Use for trends over time, not a single reading

Safety note

Educational calculator only. It does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. If you have symptoms, take medications, are pregnant, or have medical conditions, review results with a licensed clinician or registered dietitian before acting on them.

Calculate

Select your sex to use the correct Navy formula.

Select the unit system that matches your measurements.

Enter your height in cm (metric) or inches (imperial).

Measure below the larynx, tape level and snug.

Measure at the narrowest point (usually at navel level).

Optional. Add weight to get BMI and fat/lean mass estimates.

How It Works

  1. Enter your measurements: Provide your height, neck, waist, and (for women) hip measurements. Weight is optional but needed for BMI and fat/lean mass estimates.
  2. Select units and sex: Choose metric (cm/kg) or imperial (in/lb) units that match your measurements. Select your sex to use the correct Navy formula.
  3. Navy formula calculation: The calculator converts all measurements to inches internally and applies the US Navy equations. For men: BF% = 86.01 × log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76. For women: BF% = 163.205 × log10(waist + hips - neck) - 97.684 × log10(height) - 78.387.
  4. BMI (if weight provided): If you enter weight, the calculator also computes BMI using the standard formula: BMI = weight / height² (with unit conversions as needed).
  5. Fat and lean mass (if weight provided): If weight is provided, the calculator estimates fat mass and lean mass from your body fat percentage.
